The Zulus' Method of Advancing the Attack

The Zulus’ Method of Advancing the Attack, by William Heysham Overend, ROI (1851-1898), in The Illustrated London News (19 April 1879), 362-63. Wood engraving.

Overend specialized in marine subjects and fishermen, but as a regular on the Illustrated London News he had to produce a variety of images. This dynamic composition was based written reports and emphasises the Zulus’ movement in the rhythmic repetition of their advancing legs and shields. However, it is interesting to note that here – as in other designs of the period – the Zulus are represented as Asiatic rather than African types.
