The Zulus' Method of Advancing the Attack

The Battle of Ulundi (1880, National Army Museum, London) by Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893). This painting was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria as a gift for his wife. Yvon was a French painter who specialized in Napoleonic battle scenes. In this treatment, he shows a late stage in the engagement in which Chelmsford’s forces overcame the Zulus and concluded the war. In contrast to the other paintings of the war, the emphasis is on the panoramic spectacle rather than close fighting, with the landscape and the movement of troops being the main focus.
