Lady Gregory, whose maiden name was Persse, came from an old family long settled in Galway. She had married the owner of the Coole Park estates, but had been widowed as a young woman, several years before she met Yeats. Taking a keen interest in him, she became deeply involved in the Irish National Theatre project, in particular, writing plays for it and acting in them herself. [See reproduction of postcard below.]
