Christ appears to the Three Marys
James Powell & Sons
South Transept (top right) Romsey Abbey, Hampshire
1897
This window high in the south transept commemorates Charles John Tylee, who died in 1894, and depicts Jesus with the three Marys in front of the open tomb. Usually, the women are shown being greeted by an angel, who tells them of the resurrection; after that it is only Mary Magdalene who encounters the risen Christ. However, all three are present here. Mary Magdalene can be identified by her long rippling golden hair.
The order for this as for the other south transept windows can be found in the Powell Order Book ("1897 Part of 2l7554/28019"), but without any designer's name. It is, however, similar in composition to the pair below by Arthur Louis Duthie.
