Jesus with St James and St Catherine

Jesus with St James and St Catherine

Clayton & Bell (attributed on stylistic grounds, see Eberhard)

c.1880

North aisle west

St James' Church, Weybridge

Surrey

Erected in memory of Dame Katherine Forbes, who died in 1888, this three-light window shows St James with his pilgrim's staff and drinking bottle, reading the scriptures. St Catherine on the other side of Jesus stands against the wheel on which she was condemned to be martyred. The robes worn by all three figures are decorated with the golden floral or star-shaped motifs that the firm liked (e.g. see Jesus's robes in another Clayton and Bell window, in nearby St Peter's, Hersham). Along the bottom of the window runs the comforting text, "She is not dead but sleepeth" (Luke 8, 52).
