Punch’s Essence of Parliament

Punch’s Essence of Parliament

Edward Linley Sambourne (1844-1910)

1878

Wood engraving

Punch (26 January 1878): 26

Sambourne again presents Disraeli as a performer, in this case dramatically playing a pipe organ while Queen Victorian listens and Gladstone holds his ears. The organ pipes take the form of members of the Tory majority, and three musical scores appear in the cartoon — a triumphal march on the organ, Irish melodies near the queen’s footstool, and the jingoistic MacDermott’s War Song at the right.
