Commentary

W. M. Thackeray's historical novel The History of Henry Esmond, published in 1852, tells the story of a young colonel in the English army during the reign of Queen Anne. In the background Thackeray places some of the major events of the latter seventeenth century, a period called "The Restoration." As was the case with the Waverley novels of Sir Walter Scott, in Esmond Thackeray utilizes real and imagined characters suitable to the period of the Glorious Revolution (1688), the War of Spanish Succession (1701–1714), the Hamilton–Mohun Duel occurred on 12 November 1712 in Hyde Park, the Hanoverian succession as passed by an Act of the Parliament in 1701.
