In the Charles Dickens Library Edition, Furniss complements his usual engraved title-page, Characters in the Story, with twenty-six lively illustrations of the collection's characters and situations. These thumbnail images relate directly to Furniss's full-page illustrations in this volume. [Commentary continues below.]

Commentary

The first of Furniss's illustrations is not one of his usual pen-and-ink drawings transformed into a lithograph. Rather, he offers a cameo of two of the book's chief characters, an ink-and-wash drawing with a title, as well as the caption "I would have found my way back to you, grandfather," said the child, "never fear." This quotation suggests that Furniss is complementing the following passage:
