Rossetti’s treatment of the waiting Princes is a resonant, suggestive image, a type of design he would later develop in many of his paintings. The artist deploys gesture and gaze to suggest the character’s obsessiveness as she looks out of the window. The figure modelling is highly accomplished, and the effects of light and dark are captured by Linton’s sensitive engraving. Rossetti wanted Linton to do the work rather than the Dalziels, whose emphasis on bold blocking would probably have spoiled the delicate effect – that, at least, may have the reason for Rossetti’s preference.
