The Prince’s Progress

Artist: Dante Gabriel Rossetti

1865

Crayon

167 x 68 mm

This is Rossetti’s final solution to the question of the Prince’s emotionalized pose, showing him with his right hand over his face. The final illustration is a straight transfer from this image and represents the artist’s capacity to inscribe deep feeling in resonant gestures. It is a perfect representation of the lines, ‘You should have wept her yesterday.’
