Passage Illustrated: A Sense of Place with Mrs. Trelyon and Wenna

The spring-time seemed to have given life and colour to the sea as well as to the land, for all the world was brilliant with new brightness of the skies. [p. 123 in the 1892 edition]

it was very clear that with all her lamentations over his conduct, Mrs. Trelyon was very fond of the young man, and was quite assured too that he had the brains to do anything he might be induced to undertake. Wenna listened in a vague way to all these complaints, and speculations, and covert praises; she did not find her position so embarrassing in the open air as in that close drawing-room. They walked through the leafy alleys of the garden, unconsciously regarding the beautiful colour of the new spring flowers, and listening to the larks singing high up in the blue.
