In this publication Caldecott develops his talent for anthropomorphism, offering a series of jaunty characterizations of animals as humans. Though this mode was not original (it was used throughout Victorian illustration, and was developed in France by J. J. Grandville), Caldecott’s version of cute creatures was highly influential in Britain and was much imitated – especially by Beatrix Potter. [Click on image to enlarge it.]
