Binding

Albert Henry Warren; unsigned

1859

Blue cloth with a gilt design

9¼ x 6¾ inches

This luxurious gift book is one of the most colourful of the period; though published in 1859, it prefigures the extravagance of the sixties. The casing is a rich combination of blue cloth and gilt design while the interior contains illustrations by Birket Foster, printed in colour by Edmund Evans. The binding is attributed to A. H. Warren by Douglas Ball, who claims that it is signed in the central roundel (p.164), but I can see no such monogram. However, the binding can probably be claimed for Warren on stylistic grounds.
