Porch decoration, Perez Mason House. Broadway, Providence, Rhode Island. 1867. Date and original owner from Providence Preservation Societ plaque. The architect has taken a nearly square rectangular groundplan and added a great deal of heavy embellishments, most noticeably the massive porch with its square columns and knobs and different protruding roof extensions. A glance at the knobs and other decoration demonstrates that here the carpenter gothic decoration has more of the carpenter than the gothic, and similarly, the embellishmenmts of the barely recognizable second empire roof elements make this a statement of idiosyncratic Rhode Island vernacular. Neighboring house: 390 Broadway.
