This shows the Congregationalist Salem chapel when closed and up for sale (Inventory). Like chapels elsewhere, it had a classical, stone façade but was largely in brick; it was needed because the Lendal chapel was overcrowded. [Commentary continues below.]

The building closed the view at the north end of St Saviourgate, a fashionable street with eighteenth-century century terraced housing, a medieval church, the Institute, and two other large chapels.

The majority of the congregation of Lendal chapel transferred to this building. The main gallery was supported on cast iron columns, and the chapel itself seated 1,700. As at Lendal, there was a schoolroom below. The chapel closed in 1943, and the building was demolished in 1963. (Inventory, building 31; pls. 66, 67 and fig. 32; Pevsner and Neave 231).
