The Mess Hall and Dormitory Car at the Glanville Lumber Company Site . The scratch-built mess hall — the reincarnation of my old board-by-board one with the detailed interior — sits behind the BTS dormitory car, which I have modified by using Bar Mills shingles, different chimneys, and different positioning of the end walls. On the upper track in front of the mess hall you can see tthe blacksmith car, and below it the steam donkey pulling a log closer to the loading area.

The dormitory car is the second laser-cut kit I have made, the first being the excellent Bar Mills Majestic Hardware. This superb BTS product may be even better: perfect laser-cutting, extremely clear directions, and beautiful design. Since I model nineteenth-century railroading, I've often complained — mourned! — the disappearance of the old Central Valley wood kits and the all-metal Red Ball classics of early railroading, but the BTS logging cars plus freight cars from th 1860s and '70s, though based on different prototypes, are so wonderful they almost make up for the loss of the others.
