Illustrations for Works by Authors Other than Dickens
Besides these illustrations, Seymour provided the design for the monthly wrapper which was used for each of the twenty monthly parts. After Seymour's suicide on 20 April 1836 only two plates accompanied the letter-press of each part. The etchings of the fourth monthly number are signed "Nemo" (Latin: "Nobody"); later plates are signed by the more familiar Hablot Knight Browne pseudonym "Phiz," which he felt would better "harmonize with Dickens's Boz" (Hammerton, 85) [PVA].
