"The Characters in the Story"
14.4 x 8.2 cm vignetted
Frontispiece for A Child's History of England in Oliver Twist and A Child's History of England, Charles Dickens Library Edition (1910), vol. 3, after p. 418.
Whereas Dickens's somewhat moralistic serial version of a national history from the Roman invasion of Claudius in A. D. 43 to the Glorious Revolution (1688), in Household Words, appeared without the benefit of illustration from 25 January 1851 sporadically through 10 December 1853, and subsequently appeared in a triple-decker with just a single title-page vignette for each volume by F. W. Topham that same month, Dickens's new illustrator for the 1860s, Marcus Stone, provided eight character studies for the Illustrated Library Edition of 1862. [Click on illustration to enlarge it.]
