‘Mr Anderton supporting his wife in his arms’
George du Maurier
13 December 1862
Wood engraving by Joseph Swain.
6 x 4½ inches
This is the third illustration for Charles Warren Adams’sThe Notting Hill Mystery in Once a Week 7 (13 December 1862): 673.
The web of intrigue spreads outwards, motivated by the Baron’s control of ‘mesmeric fluid’. Du Maurier highlights the husband’s anxiety, materially adding to and modifying the text’s cool textures.
