Commentary: A Working-class Novella for The Hungry Forties

Dickens wrote The Chimes as the successor to A Christmas Carol, but here focusses on the grown-up daughter of the working-class protagonist, ticket-porter Toby ("Trotty") Veck. She makes several appearances as a chikd, but is much more significant when she grows up and, lacking the moral guidance of her uncle, Will Fern, becomes a London prostitute. Ironically, none of the fourteen chapters in Children's Stories from Dickens presents either Meg or Lilian.
