The Exterior of the Dohány Synagogue, Budapest, Hungary

Since the synagogue, supposedly the second largest in the world after one in New York City, fronts on a narrow angled street with high trees, this photograph is about the best available. The gilded patterned domes, the towers, and the surface decoration all embody the Moorish Revival style. Click on images to enlarge them.

Three views of the decorated walls and domes.

Left: The window and its decorative surround seems to combine both Moorish and Romanesque architectural vocabularies. Right: The main entrance.

A star surmounts one of the domes. Right: The walls decoration combines brick and ceramic tile.
