This 6-wheeled hand crane on display at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's "Train Story" Discovery Centre at Havenstreet was built for the MR (Midland Railway) in the 1860s. In front of it is an 1890s LSWR (London and South Western Railway) "Crane Match" truck. The clock displayed on this truck is the old Victorian Portsmouth Harbour clock, dating from 1898.

Cranes were, of course, vital for loading and unloading luggage, goods and livestock at the mainland and island harbours. Wagons for these items are on display in the same area of the Discovery Centre.

Photographs, text and formatting by Jacqueline Banerjee, who would like to thank the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's "Train Story" Discovery Centre for permitting photography.
