The Liverpool and Manchester Coal Container Cars (c. 1830) Source: The American Freight Car, which reproduces diagrams from the 1835 Technologique Chemin de Fer and which comments, “The Liverpool and Manchester introduced containers for coal in about 1830,” adding that “Nicholas wood's Practical Treatise on Rail-Roads [London, 1832] shows rollers rather than slides on the containers, and the wood-bodied rather than the metal version” (169).
