The Lewes and Uckfield Railway Company was incorporated as an independent company in the mid-1850s, but was soon taken over by the London Brighton & South Coast Railway. This looks like an example of a big company greedily swallowing up a smaller one during this period of rapid expansion; but the LBSCR's main motive seems to have been to consolidate its network in the face of possible encroachment by the SER or South Eastern Railway Company.
