Williamson depicts the protagonist of Charles Kingsley's historical novel Hypatia, a female pagan philosopher attacked, stripped of her clothing, and torn to pieces by a Christian mob in Roman Alexandria. She stands here bravely in the moments before her death — a pagan martyr to sectarian intolerance.
