Viscount Esher had become Solicitor-General in 1868 and Master of the Rolls in 1883. He was created Baron Esher of Esher in in Surrey in 1885, and Viscount Esher in 1897, and was of some importance in establishing the tort of negligence. He was interred in the family vault at Moore Place, Esher, nearby. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). He was the grandfather of the artist, Dorothy Brett — one of D.H. Lawrence's friends.
