War Memorial, Streatham Common, by Albert Toft

War Memorial

Albert Toft (1862-1949)

Bronze figure; stone plinth

Designed 1921

Leamington Spa

Toft's contemplative infantryman, head bowed in mourning for fallen comrades, and hands resting on his downturned rifle, is particularly moving. The same statue appears on several other war memorials — at Stone in Staffordshire, Streatham Common North in London, and Thornton Cleveleys in Lancashire (Bloice 6).
