Desmond A.C. Reid writes from London to suggest that the caption should read "'[Saint] Irene, widow of Saint Castulus, removing the body of Saint Sebastian after his martyrdom.' See The Golden Legend,” by Jacobus de Voragine, dating from about 1260, for details." He also points out that “a magnificent bronze version of this work is in Kilmarnock, in the Dick Institute.” Let's hope we can receive permission from the institute to include his excellent photograph.
