Ellis had studied at the college in the early days (1875-79), before becoming MP for Merioneth in 1886 until his early death in 1899. For part of that time he served as the Chief Liberal Whip. He believed in and advocated for Welsh independence, but is also important for having successfully pushed for the Welsh Intermediate and Technical Education Act of 1889. He is shown here in full declamatory mode. Ian Capper points out that there is a similar statue to him in the High Street in Bala, near to where he was born.
