Queen Victoria
Sir Alfred Gilbert, R. A. (1854-1934)
1901
Bronze
St Nicholas Square, Newcastle
According to the Public Monument and Sculpture Association National Recording Project, Gilbert here echoed the architecture of the lantern tower of the nearby church in this monument's "free arrangement of piled-up, curved pediments, brackets and pedestals" at the back of the throne, and in the canopy; its effect is said to produce a "balance of naturalism and fantasy" in the monument as a whole.
