Victory
Sir Alfred Gilbert, R. A. (1854-1934)
1887
Bronze on marble globe mounted on circular base
18 1/4 inches (46.15 cm) with 4 1/4-inch base
Other versions
The Victory figure became a sort of emblem for Gilbert and he frequently gave casts of it to his friends. The elaborate base of this particular cast, with its elongated caryatid figures has a strong stylistic affnity to the Leeds chimney piece, though it lacks its macabre imagery. Gilbert was working on this commission for Sam Wilson from 1908 to 1913.
