Whereas the most common nineteenth-century portrayal of the sphinx with a person juxtaposes the sphinx, who often symbolizes the female-as-danger, with a young man — think of famous paintings by Ingres and Moreau — here Blanchard has a young woman confronting the mysterious creature.
