Commentary by Robert Bowman

The terracotta maquette for Supplication was Dalou’s initial study for a proposed monument to Léon Gambetta. Intended for the place du Carrousel in Paris, this monument was never built. A monument was instead erected in Bordeaux. Dalou would use a similar composition to the present work for the figures of Wisdom and Freedom, which would later adorn the Bordeaux monument.
