The inscription on the pedestal reads, "THIS STATUE OF/ QUEEN VICTORIA/ WAS ERECTED/” by HER LOYAL SUBJECTS/ OF THE COUNTY OF WORCESTER/ IN COMMEMORATION OF/ THE COMPLETION OF 50 YEARS/ OF HER MAJESTY'S HAPPY REIGN/ 1887." [Commentary continues below.]

This was the very first of Brock's many statues of the Queen, at home and abroad (see caption, Brock 57, and "Catalogue of Works," pp. 177-78). The chairman of the Worcestershire Jubilee Committee, which had commissioned the statue, wrote to Brock later to congratulate him on the "great beauty" of the design, and expressed the committee's pride that "this beautiful work of art has been executed by a native of Worcestershire' (qtd. in Brock 57).
