Sir Augustus Harris was manager of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane during its heyday from 1873 to 1896. He died of exhaustion at the early age of forty-four. The Prince of Wales was patron of the memorial committee, which decided to erect a drinking fountain with a bronze bust of Harris” by Brock [Closer view of bust]. In its report on the unveiling” by the Lord Mayor on 1 November 1897, the Times noted that Brock's bust was "finely executed" (2 November 1897).
