Biography
Born at Brixton. Studied at Somerset House School of Design, then 1846-52 at Berlin Royal Academy. Returned England 1852, entered R.A. Schools, later became assistant to J. H. Foley. During that time modelled Arab horse in Foley's statue of General Outram. First exhibited at R.A., 1852. Works include: Bust of Crown Prince of Prussia, 1858; The Last Call, 1879 (depicting simultaneous death of trumpeter and horse in battle). Monuments include Godiva at Liverpool, and in London, the much criticised bronze Griffin on Temple Bar Memorial, 1880, also colossal statue of Lord Beaconsfield.
