Watts (1674-1748), the "Father of English Hymnody" (Wikipedia) became a major figure to late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Evangelicals within and without the Church of England for whom hymns were a crucial part of worship, because they could convey two central Evangelical emphases: their emotional approach to religion and their elaborate typological interpretations of the Bible.
