Design for St Jerome

H. H. Armstead

1864

Source: from the archives of W. Clarke, LLandaff

An erudite translator of the scriptures, and an early Doctor of the Church, St Jerome is generally depicted with this type of hat, for example in the Nuremberg Psalter. There might be some connection or reference here to the Grade I listed church of St Jerome's, Llangwm Uchaf, Monmouthshire, where J. P. Seddon was working in these years, as well as at Llandaff Cathedral.

Detail from a page in the Nuremberg Psalter (public domain).
