Queen Victoria. Photograph. 58 cms by 47 cms. Signed and dated June 23rd 1893. Collection of Felix Henry Santos, Spain. Click on images to enlarge them.

Queen Victoria had this signed photograph sent to the British Pro-Consul of the city of San Sebastian on the Basque coast as thanks for having helped organize her only visit to Spain: she spent a day in the seaside resort as a guest of the Queen of Spain Doña María Cristina de Borbón and the Town Hall of San Sebastian. Upon checking records and to the best of my knowledge, Queen Victoria came to Spain on 27th Mach 1889, which means there is a four year time difference between her visit and the date of her signature. The image of the Queen is roughly the size of a standard post card, and I was told it was despatched to the British Embassy in Paris, which forwarded it to a renowned framer in the French capital (the company is no longer in business) who did the most e magnificent job at framing the signed photograph. — Felix Henry Santos

Victoria’s signature and the framer’s label. [ Photograph of the reverse of the frame.]
