Statue of a Griffin

St. Mark's, Venice

Ruskin uses this griffin as an example of the grotesque and the grotesque imagination, a topic he takes up in the fourth volume of Modern Painters and The Stones of Venice. He also includes a drawing of the griffin in one of his works.
