Sandpiper on Nest

The 1902 edition of Gilbert White's The Natural History of Selborne
At this point, White is talking about dead specimen: "The first that was brought me (on the 14th of May) was the sandpiper ... it was a cock bird, and haunted the banks of some ponds near the village; and, as it had a companion, doubtless intended to have bred near that water" (60). In a note on the previous page, Richard Kearston had said firmly, in connection with other species, "we do not recommend slaughter for verification" (59), and this photograph seems to drive home the point.
