According to the editors, many of whose remarks seem based on Thomas Hardy's Wessex (1913) by Herman Lea,
Chalk Walk, an avenue on the town walls [in the area now called "Top o' the Town"], 'leading to an angle where the North and West escarpments met.' From this walk a footpath leads down into the Bath and Bristol Road. Henchard and Farfrae walked here.
