Coastal View (Mouth of the Yealm, Devon), by Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942). c. 1940. Oil on canvas. H 48 x W 72.5 cm. Collection: University of Exeter, Fine Art Collection. Accession no. On the south-west coast of Devon, below Dartmoor, the River Yealm reaches the sea not far from Plymouth, and its estuary on the English Channel, just before it widens into the Atlantic, is a renowned beauty spot. Widgery has captured it here in its all its sweep and solitude.
