Dartmoor Stream, Devon attributed to Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942). Nineteenth Century. Oil on canvas. H 100 x W 150 cm. Collection: University of Exeter, Fine Art Collection. Accession no. FAC00304. Here is an example of an autumn scene with frothing water pouring past boulders, light catching on some of the bushes and grass, and a little blue in the cloudy sky, indicating the unpredictable weather of this time of year. Moorland might not seem dramatic to those passing through it, but Widgery found the drama in it, not least in its constantly changing seasons and varying moods. As always, he has caught it lovingly here.
