Moonrise over Hare Tor, Dartmoor by Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942), signed in capitals on the left-hand side. c. 1919. Watercolour. The title was inscribed on the backing paper by the purchaser, together with the information that it was bought in Devonshire, in August 1919. It might have been only recently painted. Private Collection.

This a good example of Widgery's atmospheric and evocative work in his beloved moorlands. It is rather similar to his Harvest Moon, Exmoor of about the same time, among his illustrations for John Presland's Lynton and Lynmouth: A Pageant of Cliff & Moorland (facing p. 122).
