Billingsgate by James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834–1903). Signed and dated “1859.” Etching on Japan paper, 153 x 225 mm. The Stamp of Whistler reproduced the seventh state of the etching, which is in the Allen Memorial Art Museum of Oberlin College. Robert W. Getscher points out that “the vignetted boat in the foreground and the musical procession of masts are two popular motifs of Whistler which received wide currency when this plate was published in January 1878 in The Portfolio” (61).
