Commentary by Paul Crowther

A label to the reverse indicates that the picture was exhibited at the Watts memorial exhibition in Manchester, 1904. Lyons (1790–1858) was a distinguished diplomat and naval commander, who commanded the British Fleet in the Black Sea during the Crimean War (1854−1856). Watts did a three-quarter length oil portrait of Lyons in 1856.
