Sorrow

Sorrow, by Frederic Shields (1833-1911). Before 1904. Collection of Herbert Trench in 1904. Source: The Studio (October 1904): 7.

Note

This work was originally attributed to Frederick Sandys, both by Percy Bate and a much more recent art historian, Betty Elzea, who has worked extensively on Sandys. However, a close look at the upper left of the drawing reveals the monogram F. S., set within a shield — the monogram of Frederick Shields. When this was drawn to her attention, Elzea acknowledged that the drawing must indeed be by Shields. Art historian Scott Buckle concurs with this opinion. — Dennis T. Lanigan.
