Source: Plate 41 in Hewison, John Ruskin: The Argument of the Eye, which points out that “Ruskin re-uses a photograph originally taken to illustrate the subject matter of Prout (14.588) as a drawing exercise. Ignoring the original picturesque context (p. 48), he selects a detail so that when the student 'has learned to draw these leaves as the photograph represents them, he will know how to admire the imaged leaves carved at the side of them'” (21.294).
