The Rossettis, Look Again. Lecture to be given by Carol Jacobi. Lecture starts at 11am (GMT). THIS LECTURE WILL BE DELIVERED VIA ZOOM.

A glimpse into the discoveries and development of Tate’s first show devoted to Dante Gabriel Rossetti or Elizabeth Siddal (later Rossetti), the first anywhere to explore the radical Rossetti generation together. Christina Rossetti’s fame continues to outstrip her siblings, but Gabriel represents Pre-Raphaelitism and Elizabeth Siddal has an increasing following. Recent scholarship has suggested fascinating new perspectives and we reconsider their work for 21st century audiences. Love and revolution are the key themes. The Rossettis led a counterculture before, through and beyond the Pre-Raphaelite years, reinventing art and ‘new life’ for their fast-changing world. They told daring stories realised, as the century progressed, in increasing psychological intimacy and abstract techniques of poetry and paint. The exhibition innovates new display methods to dramatise reverberations between the art and literature of the circle, including the famous pairings of poems and paintings, the ‘double works of art’.

Carol Jacobi stumbled across the Pre-Raphaelites in Birmingham collections, as a schoolgirl. This led to a love of art history and inclusive perspectives and research. She has a PhD in Art History, MAs in Nineteenth-century English Literature and in Paintings Conservation and taught at Birkbeck, the Courtauld Institute and elsewhere. She held the Leverhulme Fellowship in the History of Portraiture at the National Portrait Gallery and curated William Holman Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite Vision; Love and Desire (Toronto, Minneapolis, Manchester). Since 2012 she has been Curator of British Art 1850-1915 at Tate Britain working across periods including modern and contemporary art.  Exhibitions and include Van Gogh and Britain (Tate Britain); Pre-Raphaelite Masterpieces from the Tate (Canberra, Milan, Budapest); Ophelia (Shanghai); Painting with Light, Art and Photography from the Pre-Raphaelite to the Modern Age and Salt and Silver, Early Photography and displays Pre-Raphaelites on Paper; Fairy Round and 'Poor Man's Picture Gallery': Art and Stereoscopic Photography (all Tate Britain). She publishes and broadcasts widely on British art.
